Who is Coach Tyler Johnston?

Tyler Kapono Johnston grew up a competitive kid. Kapono means "righteous one" in the Hawaiian language, and this is the approach he takes toward helping others in their training. He had a need to win attitude in everything from board games to baseball. With team sports, he had the attitude that he had to help all of his teammates on the field, which meant lots of running. This great conditioning meant he could transition to other sports without much issue. Wanting to be like his older brother, he joined wrestling in middle school and that's where he found himself having a new type of fun. It was full of constant action similar to soccer, he had full responsibility if he won or lost, and he got to compete against people his own size. He continued with wrestling throughout college, becoming a team captain his senior year, and having a competitive and respectable last two seasons.

Following college, he worked as an Athletic Trainer for over 7 years ranging from high school to NCAA Division II programs. With these experiences, he had the opportunity to work with over a thousand student-athletes ranging from 14 to 28 years. He worked daily with student-athletes during all parts of their in-season and off-season. This work meant building relationships with the athletes, learning how they move, evaluating and diagnosing orthopedic injuries as it happened on the field, gym, or court, and referring to appropriate health care providers or providing treatment and physical rehabilitation in the Athletic Training Room.

While Tyler enjoyed caring for student-athletes injuries and helping them progress back to competition level safely, he did feel something was missing. He felt he could provide people with the knowledge of how to properly progress their strength, mobility, and athleticism while lowering their risk of injury. He studied and earned his Certification as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and he continues to study on the broad subject of strength and conditioning. His lifestyle continues to be an active one, during the course of a week he may be training for endurance running races, lifts weights, coaches college wrestlers, rock climbs, and participates in yoga as well.

While his focus has been on younger athletes, he knows that there are athletes of all ages and levels of experience. Dealing with injuries himself, he is aware that everyone gets injured at one point in their life and training. The best way to prevent injury to is lower the risk of it from occurring  as frequently and it will help you train longer, harder, and you'll have more fun doing the activities you love! Consistent training and practice will help you to learn and develop skills within and outside of the gym. Training with Coach Tyler will help you feel good about the one body you were gifted with. He wants you to be proud and confident in your body, and to help build the healthy habits to maintain and improve your body. As cliche as it sounds, he believes in you and wants you to believe it as well.
